From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In philosophy, theory (from ancient Greek theoria, θεωρία, meaning "a looking at, viewing, beholding") refers to contemplation or speculation, as opposed to action. Theory is especially often contrasted to "practice" (Greek praxis, πρᾶξις) which is a concept that in its original Aristotelian context referred to actions done for their own sake. The other type of actions are those "technical" ones done because they are instrumental to some other aim, such as making things like tools or houses. "Theoria" is also a word still used in theological contexts. A classical example sometimes used to explain the distinction was within medicine. Medical theory and theorizing involves trying to understand the causes and nature of health and sickness, while the practical side of medicine is trying to make people healthy. These two things are related but can be independent, because it is possible to research health and sickness without curing specific patients, and it is possible to cure a patient without knowing how the cure worked. The verb θεωρία apparently developed special uses early in the Greek language. In the book, From Religion to Philosophy, Francis Cornford suggests that the Orphics used the word "theory" to mean 'passionate sympathetic contemplation' . Pythagoras changed the word to mean a passionate sympathetic contemplation of mathematical and scientific knowledge. This was because Pythagoras considered such intellectual pursuits the way to reach the highest plane of existence. Pythagoras stressed on killing the emotions and the lusts of the body and the release of the intellect to soar into the exalted domain of theory. Thus it was Pythagoras who gave the word "theory" the specific meaning which leads to the classical and modern concept of a distinction between theory as uninvolved, neutral thinking, and practice. While theories in the arts and philosophy may address ideas and not easily observable empirical phenomena, in modern science the term "theory", or "scientific theory" is generally understood to refer to a proposed explanation of empirical phenomena, made in a way consistent with the scientific method. Such theories are preferably described in such a way that any scientist in the field is in a position to understand, verify, and challenge (or "falsify") it. In this modern scientific context the distinction between theory and practice corresponds roughly to the distinction between theoretical science and technology or applied science. GNU Free Documentation License What is the difference between design theory of evolution and intelligent design? Q. I know that intelligent design is the theological aspect of evolution, but that there is also another theory called "design theory." How does this theory work without using God as an explanation? Thank you!!! Asked by Yoni - Sun Mar 23 21:22:07 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Design theory is just another name for Intelligent Design. Intelligent Design is not so much a 'theory', as a set of questions posed to evolution. I.e. it questions whether Darwininan theory of evolution by natural selection is sufficient to explain various features we find in biology ... but it doesn't actually offer much in the way of an alternative explanation of these features. In fairness, these are often very good questions. Questions about complexity, information, the emergence of hierarchy, etc. But: 1. A set of questions is not a theory. A theory needs to *explain* something ... describe it in terms of something simpler. Asking questions to dispute evolution doesn't offer an alternative explanation. Some theory correlates the number of nipples an animal has to the number of offspring it is likely to give birth to in one birthing. Something about how half the number is the norm and the total number of nipples is the most, on average that is. So if an animal has six nipples, then they are likely to give birth three offspring but not more than six. Asked by ChanceEncounter - Fri Apr 24 11:17:47 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I believe you are speaking of the "One-Half Rule". According to this rule, the average number of young in a litter is one half the typical number of mammaries and the maximum litter size is equal to the total number of mammaries. The link below will take you to a New York Times article that discusses this. Answered by cintchick - Mon Apr 27 00:04:40 2009 What is the theory that flies come from rotting meat that was disproven?
