Reflexology (zone therapy) is a pseudoscience and an alternative medicine, complementary, or integrated medicine method of treatment involving the physical act of applying pressure to the feet and hand with specific thumb, finger and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on a system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands with a premise that such work effects a physical change to the body. A 2009 systematic review of randomised controlled trials concluded that the latest available evidence does not show convincingly that reflexology is an effective treatment for any medical condition. The Reflexology Association of Canada defines reflexology as:
There is no consensus among reflexologists on how reflexology is supposed to work; a unifying theme is the idea that areas on the foot correspond to areas of the body, and that by manipulating these one can improve health through one's qi. Reflexologist say that the body is divided into ten equal vertical zones, five on the right and five on the left. There are also three transverse lines, the upper region of the shoulder girdle, the waistline, and the pelvic floor. Concerns have been raised by medical professionals that treating potentially serious illnesses with reflexology, which has no proven efficacy, could delay the seeking of appropriate medical treatment. Reflexology is recommended as a complementary therapy and should not replace medical treatment. A systematic review of the efficacy of reflexology found one study showing a statistically significant effect in the treatment of urinary symptoms in multiple sclerosis patients. All other conditions reviewed in this study showed no evidence of any specific effect. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I've had general massages before-swedish and know that pedicures are enjoyable but is there anything special about reflexology vs a pedicure? Asked by dylan383 - Mon May 14 23:32:31 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. A pedicure is just a fluff massage and cleaning. Reflexology is a totally different experience. Reflexology help with your general health and will make your feet feel like you have been walking on clouds. Be sure to make sure whom ever is giving you the massage is certified or else they may be doing more harm then good. Sometimes reflexology can be a bit painful if you have a lot of issues. However, it's the good kind of pain that will feel so much better once it's done. Make sure to drink plenty of water after any kind of massage so help flush the toxins from your system. Q. I am a Certified Reflexologist just starting out in my own business. I have no idea how much to charge. I don't want to undercut myself but don't want to be too expensive either. I am from England, living in Canada so i don't really know what would be classed as expensive here. Asked by spaceboy71 - Sat Nov 8 14:47:38 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well, it depends on how long your treatments are gonna be. Im a Certified Massage Therapist and I charge differently, depending on the length of the treatment. I would recommend starting low, since you are just starting out. This will help to build a clientele. Then, once things start to pick up, you can raise your prices a little. Good Luck!
