A moon landing is the arrival of a spacecraft on the surface of the Moon. This includes both manned and unmanned (robotic) missions. The first human-made object to reach the surface of the Moon was the Soviet Union's Luna 2 mission on September 13, 1959. The United States's Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon on July 20, 1969. Unmanned landingsSince the Soviet Union first succeeded in implementing the concept in 1966, this term referred to 18 spacecraft landings on the Moon up to 1976. The USSR was first to accomplish a lunar hard landing (impact). The United States was behind in matching this achievement. The USSR was also first to succeed in a soft landing, enabling the gathering of scientific data from the surface. Again the US was behind in matching that. Since this was during the time of the Cold War, the contest to be the first on the Moon was one of the most visible facts of the Space Race. The Soviet Union later achieved sample returns via the unmanned Luna 16, Luna 20 and Luna 24 Moon landings. Luna 17 and Luna 21 were successful rover missions. (All six US missions that returned samples, including three rovers, were accomplished with a human crew, eclipsing these later Soviet successes.) In more recent years, Japan, Europe, India and China have all achieved successful lunar hard landing missions. From Wikipedia under the

We've all seen the footage of the astronauts landing on the moon but what I don't understand is how did they set up the camera gear that was used to tape the landing? Was it somehow sent to the moon before the shuttle got there for this purpose? Asked by Me - Wed Jan 28 20:36:25 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. The camera on Apollo 11 was housed inside a protected cavity in one of the landing legs - they deployed the camera from inside the lander before they emerged. By the way, it wasn't a shuttle (they weren't created until the 1980's). Apollo 11 (and the other moon missions) was a different type of craft.
