A phenomenon (from Greek φαινόμενoν), plural phenomena, is any observable occurrence. In popular usage, a phenomenon often refers to an extraordinary event. In scientific usage, a phenomenon is any event that is observable, however commonplace it might be, even if it requires the use of instrumentation to observe it. For example, in physics, a phenomenon may be a feature of matter, energy, or spacetime, such as Isaac Newton's observations of the moon's orbit and of gravity, or Galileo Galilei's observations of the motion of a pendulum.

Use in gemology

In gemology a phenomenon is an unusual optical effect that is displayed by a gem. Play-of-color, labradorescence, iridescence, adularescence, chatoyancy, asterism, aventurescence, lustre and color change are all phenomena of this type.

Does Science really provide a sufficient and adequate information in explaining such phenomena?
Q. Science provoked different laws, theories and observations about each and every phenomena and still continue to explain such phenomena that is beyond our knowledge... Does Science really provide a sufficient and adequate information in explaining such phenomena?. If yes, justify your answer, If not, can you please discuss an example of a phenomena that science can't really explain.

A. I get the impression that you don't know what you're asking. If science explains a phenomenon (phenomena is singlular; phenomena is plural), it is by definition not beyond our knowledge. There are many phenomena that science has not satistfactorily explained. The expansion of the universe at an increasing rate is attributed to dark energy, but no one knows what dark energy is. Most of the matter in the universe is dark matter, but no one knows what dark matter is. It is still uncertain what gives subatomic particles their masses; the Higgs boson has been proposed as an explanation but has not yet been discovered. Relatively little is known about how the brain produces consciousness. There are still debates about the evolutionary… [cont.]

Which optical phenomena causes the sky to appear blue?
Q. Which type of optical phenomena would best explain why the sky is blue? Reflection, Refraction, Diffraction or Interference? Why? I think it might be refraction. I don't want to hear about Rayleigh scattering I already know about that.

A. It's not refraction. It's largely Rayleigh scattering, sorry, with Mie scattering contributing. From : "Rayleigh scattering of sunlight in clear atmosphere is the main reason why the sky is blue: Rayleigh and cloud-mediated scattering contribute to diffuse light (direct light being sunrays)." From : "Scattering and absorption are major causes of the attenuation of radiation by the atmosphere. Scattering varies as a function of the ratio of the particle diameter to the wavelength of the radiation. When this ratio is less than about one-tenth, Rayleigh scattering occurs in which the scattering coefficient varies inversely as the fourth power of the wavelength. At larger values of the ratio of particle diameter to wavelength, the… [cont.]

Q. Treatment could be life long phenomena. Should a family expected to pay for it should the government be expected to pay for it?

A. I do strongly believe that clear psychiatric disorders such a bipolar, mania, depression, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders such as suicidal tendencies should be covered by Federal and Provincial/(State) Health plans. In Canada, any psychiatric "mental" problem which is addressed by a "Medical Psychiatric Doctor" or General Practitioner, who is qualified to prescribe medication is usually covered under our Health Care programs administered by the individual Provinces. Psychologists dealing with personal family dysfunctional problems, or neurotic personal disorders are not medical doctors; and, are not permitted to prescribe medications. Thus they are usually not covered by Federal and Provincial plans. Private Health Plans… [cont.]
